You know the modern formula already: clean, open, minimal, functional. But you may not know how to make the sleek design aesthetic have character, be family-friendly, or even a little bit colorful. Whether you want to go full-on mid-century or have something a little more contemporary, let these modern kitchens inspire you to think outside the farmhouse box.
When you have just a few cabinet doors and a small stretch of countertops, your best bet for making a decorative splash just might be your refrigerator. As for the fixtures and appliances, some models are preferred. An under-mount sink is preferred to a drop-in model because it’s more practical and hygienic. We also asked Sue about tendencies Sherwin-Williams is seeing paint finishes and sheens for kitchen cabinetry. She told us that a lower-sheen end is trending -- a look very similar to matte finish having a furniture texture and weathered styling.
Deeper cupboard paint colours are a favorite fad this season too, says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. Shades such as navy, silted teal, dark grey, and abundant brown have surged in popularity this season and operate best paired with neutral or white walls such as contrast.
